Mystical Faya - Brighter Days (Khanti Records)

Net zoals ook al op 'Brighter Days' het geval was, wisselt Mystical Faya ook deze keer het geweer stilistisch al eens graag van schouder, resulterend in een tracklist waarin zowel new roots, naar metal neigende dubstep ('Cut Your Ties'), UK steppers ('Shine Bright') en zelfs een intieme pianoballad ('I'll Be Around') terug te vinden is.

Verschillende tracks verschenen al eerder als single, te beginnen met 'Crying', een pleidooi voor het uiten en zich bewust worden van onze emoties, dat in de zomer van 2022 werd uitgebracht vergezeld van een artistieke clip met danser Mame Mor Tall in een hoofdrol.

Tot de hoogtepunten uit de tracklist behoort ongetwijfeld 'My Song', een persoonlijk relaas over de helende kracht van reggaemuziek:

Maar ook het trage, spirituele 'Feeling', een combinatie met Chezidek, is een pareltje. Een pak steviger klinkt dan weer het al vermelde 'Cut Your Ties', waarvoor de toepasselijk getitelde interlude 'Tension Rise' volledig als intro dient; een waarschuwing voor het beleid van de zogenaamde "pyromaniac firemen", die een politieke agenda voeren waarbij ze tegelijk branden blijven aanwakkeren om zich daarna aan te dienen als reddende brandbestrijders (zie bijvoorbeeld de zeer dubbelzinnige rol die de Verenigde Staten momenteel spelen in het conflict tussen Israël en Palestina):

En ook afsluiter 'Never Again' lijkt te alluderen op de steeds weer opnieuw opflakkerende gewapende conflicten wereldwijd:

Echt besluiten doet 'Brighter Days' met dubversies van 'Try' en 'Shine Bright'. In onze recensie van hun 'Born Again' EP beschreven wij Mystical Faya nog als: "…een Franse band die u zeker in de gaten moet blijven houden!" en met deze langspeler bewijzen ze dat we zeker geen ongelijk hadden!
