Joe Yorke - Hopeless (Rhythm Steady)

Net als op 'A Distant Beat' durft Yorke ook op 'Hopeless' buiten de krijtlijnen van het reggaegenre kleuren met genres als soul (de heerlijke opener en titelnummer 'Hopeless', 'Dreaming') en leunt de melancholie van zijn nummers zeer dicht aan bij de pop, nu-folk en rock van veel van zijn generatiegenoten.

Het zwaartepunt van 'Hopeless' (een titel verwijzend naar het gevoel van veel Britten wat betreft de huidige economische situatie, de hardheid van het dagelijks bestaan en de irrationele uitoefening van politieke macht) blijft echter nog steeds het reggaegenre, geaccentueerd door vocale gastbijdragen van Marina P en Solo Banton.

En opnieuw zijn het de vaak doodsimpele maar oh zo naar de keel grijpende teksten die Joe's nummers net naar het hoogste niveau tillen.

Luister bijvoorbeeld eens naar 'Man', een ijzersterke aanklacht tegen femicide of geweld tegen vrouwen:

I don't wanna see another sister suffer,

Of neem 'Crazy Love', één van twee duetten met Solo Banton, waarmee Yorke dan weer op een geniale manier uithaalt tegen misplaatst nationalisme:
