Hempress Sativa - Charka (Conquering Lion Records)

De titel van het album, 'Charka' en dus niet chakra, is een verwijzing naar Sativa's bijnaam: "I am reminded of the profound influence of my parents' strong Rastafari and Pan-African background, which led to my nickname Charka, meaning "life". This name carries significant meaning for me, as I was born prematurely at seven months. 'Charka' serves as a representation of the diverse stages of life that I have encountered and embraced. Each track holds a unique perspective. For example, 'Give Me Loving' explores the complexities of love and relationships, while 'Ghetto Life' reflects on my upbringing in the ghettos of Mona Common. 'None But Jah' is a tribute to the Most High, expressing my gratitude and praise, while 'Top Rank Queens' celebrates the incredible strength and beauty of Rastafari women, and 'Wisdom', encapsulates my personal experiences and insights withing the music industry.". 

Blijft over: een opsomming van onze persoonlijke favorieten op het album. 'Give Me Loving' is een uitstekend duet over de liefde tussen een vader en zijn dochter, waarvoor Sativa haar eigen vader Albert 'Ilawi Malawi' Johnson achter de microfoon liet plaatsnemen. Die man blijkt trouwens over een uitstekende stem te beschikken en het nummer doet wat denken aan een productie van Dennis Brown. Het is trouwens niet het enige familielid dat opduikt op 'Charka', want in de intro en outro van 'The Best' horen we de stem van Sativa's moeder Doris Ricketts. 

Met 'Take Me Home' neemt Sativa ons inhoudelijk en muzikaal mee naar Afrika en dat in het perfecte gezelschap van Kelissa die zelf nog een hele tijd in Kenia, Ghana en Ethiopië verbleef.

Geen Hempress Sativa-album zonder ganja tune natuurlijk en op 'Charka' bewierookt ze het groen kruid in 'Ganja Hustling', een duet met Keida. 

Ook wat haar persoonlijke muzikale voorkeuren betreft laat Sativa er geen twijfel over bestaan en zo klinkt het in 'Strictly Roots':

Maar het nummer op 'Charka' waar je gewoon niet langs kunt is 'Top Rank Queens', Sativa's update van Althea & Donna's 'Uptown Top ranking' waarvoor ze kon rekenen op de vocale steun van vrouwelijke Jamaicaanse pioniers Sister Carol en Sister Nancy. 

Hempress Sativa: "I grow up calling Sister Carol "Auntie"... so when I had the idea to recreate Althea and Donna's 'Uptown Top Ranking' I reached out to Sister Carol and she said: "Send the riddim!". I asked her if she thought Sister Nancy would be interested and she said: "Ask her, she always loved you!".
