Net zoals ondergetekende onderschrijft ook Kabaka Pyramid het gezegde: "Never change a winning team!" en werkte hij dus net als voor 'Kontraband' opnieuw samen met Damian Marley.
Kabaka vat 'The Kalling' zelf als volgt samen: "'The Kalling' is really about my journey in music being for a higher purpose, not just to get rich or popular, but to inspire a higher vibration in whoever listens. While the majority seek pleasure and sense gratification, there are a few who the Most High kall upon to keep the balance inna earth. Music is what I use to answer the kall!".
Met opener 'Mystik Man', waarvoor Kabaka 'Mystic Man' van Peter Tosh (al tijdens zijn leven één van de meest uitgesproken en militante Jamaicaanse artiesten) samplede. Bij het daaropvolgende 'Red Gold And Green', een combination tune met zijn goede maatje Damian Marley, kunnen wij ons nu al een uitbundig vlaggenzwaaimoment op een festivalpodium voorstellen, maar in het nummer schuwt Pyramid ook de kritiek op wannabe-Rastafari niet: "Some a dem a wear the colours and dem nah do dem research…".
De tracklist bulkt van de samenwerkingen, zoals titelnummer 'The Kalling', four the hard way, met naast Kabaka zelf ook nog Protoje, Stephen Marley en Jesse Royal (en opnieuw met de boodschap: "When yuh tek up Rasta bann?r, do nuh tek it fi nuh joke. It's more than just di locks upon yuh h?ad an' what yuh smoke!"), twee duetten met Jemere Morgan (het soulvolle 'Grateful', over wat de melodie van een oude soulklassieker lijkt, en het uptempo, en dus toepasselijk getitelde, funky klinkende 'Energy') of het militante 'Stand', Kabaka's gebalde vuist tegen het voortdurende racistisch gemotiveerd politiegeweld, met de ons onbekende Nathalia (een Amerikaanse zangeres, songwriter en deel van producertrio LIONCHLD). Blijven nog over: de uitstekende ganja tune 'Mary Jane' met Black Am I, 'Mr. Rastaman' met Tifa, het Latin-getinte r&b-flavored 'Life Is Everything' met Answele, en last, but by no means least, 'Faded Away', een meer dan geslaagde update van Junior Byles' 'Fade Away' met Buju Banton.
Wat Kabaka's solonummers betreft, verdienen zeker 'Make Things Work' en love tune 'Safe Right Here' een vermelding, al was het maar omdat Kabaka dat laatste nummer schreef in samenwerking met Jah9, die ook te horen is als backing vocaliste. Maar onze persoonlijke favorieten blijven toch 'EZ Ride', waarvoor Kabaka Edi Fitzroy's 'Easy Ride' samplede, en 'Addiction', waarin Pyramid onze smartphoneverslavingen en alles wat daarbij komt kijken aan de kaak stelt:
