Fitzroy Lee - Nu Roots (Records DK)

Fitzroy groeide op in Tikki Tikki, een kleine gemeenschap in Manchester in Jamaica. Van kindsbeen af had hij de liefde voor muziek te pakken en op zijn negentiende maakte hij met zijn tante, zangeres Lisa Dainjah, in de Bust Out Studio in Kingston zijn eerste opnames. Uit die periode bracht Fitzroy het uitstekende 'A Lamb' dat hij met haar opnam, op de EP 'Ratoon', opnieuw uit. Lisa herinnert zich die beginperiode als volgt: "I realized that Fitzroy is a singer because of his sense of humor. The way he grew up without his mother. The way he had to push a cart at the market gate to send himself to school. He took it with an easy smile. So, I realized his talent trough that. Only singers and players of instruments shall be there. His mother Beverly Mitchell my late sister was a very good singer. Wich I don't think he knew, because he never grew up with her. Music for Fitzroy is an inborn concept. That's why I motivated and inspired him … I encouraged him to come to Kingston, to the musical capital, where he could start his career and recorded him to let him hear for himself the sound in him. He then migrated to Australia."

Na zijn eerste kennismaking met het studiowerk stond zijn keuze vast om voor een muzikale carrière te kiezen: "Working in the studio with Lisa was when I realised that I was a studio man. I wanted to keep producing my music long term. Music is my joy and my art and it's important for me to record my own songs because I found out I have a unique gift to contribute to the great art of Jamaica and to the world. I never wanted to leave Jamaica especially because I'd just started working on my music in the studio in Kingston, but to cut a long story short I followed my heart to Australia."

In zijn nieuwe thuis, in New South Wales, was hij zes jaar lang de frontman van de Drama King reggae band. Een leerrijke ervaring, een gelegenheid om zijn muziek met het Australische publiek te delen en tegelijkertijd de verbondenheid met zijn eigen roots & culture in stand te houden.

Al tien jaar presenteert hij ook op maandagavond, op een lokale zender (2NVR), zijn eigen radioprogramma: "My show 'Reggae Mix Tape' gives me a chance to stay in touch and close to my culture in a faraway land and listen to the greats like Dennis Brown, Tenor Saw, Yellowman, Professor Nuts, Junior Murvin, Papa Levi and Jimmy Cliff. When I'm sitting in that radio station for those 2 hours it makes me feel like I'm back in Jamaica."

Na jaren samenwerken met Australische artiesten achtte hij de tijd rijp voor een terugkeer naar de eigen Roots. Voor het nieuwe album deed hij beroep op beats van opkomende Jamaicaanse producers terwijl de vocals in Australië werden opgenomen: "After spending years collaborating with various Australian musicians, I decided it was time for me to go back to my roots and source my beats from upcoming Jamaican producers for the new album. Max Thrower then produced my vocals and mixed the album in his garden studio in a nice little town in Australia called Bellingen."

De boodschap die hij met het album wil uitdragen verwoord hijzelf als volgt: "The message of 'Nu Roots' is about positivity, fun and happiness. After a couple of years of global struggle with the pandemic and drastic modern changes it was important for me to create an album that would uplift people's spirits and send out an essence of hope."

Het ietwat autobiografische 'Mi No Know' is, met een knipoogje naar Eek-A-Mouse, een sterke opener die ons best wist te bekoren. Verder telt het album met 'Rastaman', 'Magnet And Steel', 'Girl In Me Dream', 'My Love Will Always Be There For You', 'Baby Don't Go' en 'I Like To Party' in hoofdzake behoorlijke, vrij klassiek klinkende love tunes. Met 'Big Monkey Man', een grappig beklag tegen ontrouw en veelmannerij, krijgen we een liefdesverhaal op andere wijze voorgeschoteld.

Persoonlijk vinden we dat Fitzroy's talent het best uitkomt in zijn meer geëngageerde songs waaronder het uitstekende 'Superstitious': "The leaders of the Earth promise we all kinda things to vote for them and when we vote and them win them take taxes and cut your throat.", wat heel wat onder ons ongetwijfeld kunnen beamen.

'Don't Be Dullboy', een zinspeling op het Engels spreekwoord, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy", brengt de boodschap dat naast het werk aandacht voor vrije tijd onontbeerlijk is. 'Positivity Give Strength' is een mooie en welgemeende ode aan moeder aarde: "This song was inspired by the power and beauty and healing energy of the land that I live on and that provides for me every day. I have stay connected to the trees to the plants to the birds to everything in nature. It is a constant source of inspiration for me. I'm a sun worshipper, star gazer, moon walking spirit journeying through this beautiful life and I give my thanks for beauty and blessing that surround me every day."

Het zinloze geweld in Jamaica klaagt Fitzroy aan in 'No Guns'. De song licht eveneens een tip van de sluier over waarom Jamaicaanse artiesten hun heil soms buiten het eiland opzoeken: "No guns… In Jamaica there is a big gun culture so it has been a blessing for me to come and live in a peaceful country where I don't have to be on edge about the possibility of being shot at. I can walk down the street anytime of the night and feel safe."

Alhoewel niet alle songs op het album ons in dezelfde mate wisten te bekoren, is deze 'Nu Roots' het ontdekken en beluisteren zeker waard.
