Saimn-I - Who I Be (Eigen Beheer/BoomRoom Production/Sir Runnin' Records)

Wie zich nog afvraagt wie Saimn-I in godsnaam is, wordt met dit album, waarop de man vocaal alle registers opentrekt (van rub-a-dub over zang tot zelfs een verrassende goed falsetstem), mooi van antwoord gediend. Saimn-I opent met 'Jah Plan' een heerlijke rub-a-dub ode aan de allerhoogste, gevolgd door het aanstekelijke 'Burden', over de trials and crosses van een leven in Babylon, Sodom en Gomorra, of hoe u het ook wilt omschrijven.

'Who U Ago Call', niet de Ghostbusters zo blijkt, maar opnieuw de allerhoogste natuurlijk, aldus Saimn-I, die in dit nummer zijn beste falsetstem bovenhaalt. Enkel voor 'Take U Down', waarin hij verbaal komaf maakt met zijn rivalen in het soundwereldje en daarbuiten, maakte Saimn-I een uitzondering en nodigde hij met Ion One (het reggaepseudoniem van rapper Ozi One van het Brugse Forward Fever) ook een vocale gast uit.

Een gevoelige snaar raakt Saimn-I zeker met 'Changing', waarin hij het veranderende drugsgebruik in de dubscene hekelt, een tekst die we u absoluut niet willen onthouden:

Afsluiten doet Simon met het autobiografische en net iets meer hiphop-getinte titelnummer 'Who I Be', gevolgd door nog eens evenveel lekkere dubs van de hand van Unlisted Fanatic.

Wij hadden er wellicht eerder voor gekozen om alle dubs showcase-gewijs telkens na de vocal track te laten volgen, maar dat is detailkritiek. 'Who I Be' hoort bij het beste wat wij dit jaar op reggaegebied te horen kregen. Maximum respect to Saimn-I en Unlisted Fanatic fort this rock-solid effort!
