Dean Fraser - Flat Bridge (Tad's Record)

De titel van het album en het gelijknamige nummer verwijzen letterlijk naar een brug over de Rio Cobre in Saint Catherine: "When we were recording in the studio last year, the island was experiencing some rough showers, and the river was in spate. The engineer was from Linstead and, when he reached the studio, commented: "Bwoy nuttin can't pass Flat Bridge!", and it was just a studio vibe after that and we ended up calling the song we were working on at that time 'Flat Bridge'! As a matter of fact, quite a few of the song titles on the album come from interacting with people who came tot he studio while we were working.".

Fraser is bekend als pleitbezorger voor authentieke instrumentale Jamaicaaanse reggae: "One of the things wi losing in our music is the instrumental vibe. Wi have a sound and a style as Caribbean people, and we should keep the tradition going!".

Wat 'Flat Bridge' betreft liet de saxofonist dan ook niets aan het toeval over en omringde zich met zwaargewichten uit het reggaegenre als Sly Dunbar (drums), Flabba Holt (bas), Franklin 'Bubbler' Waul (toetsen) en gitarist Lamont 'Monty' Savory, maar Fraser vindt het net zo belangrijk om ook jonge talenten een kans te geven - "We bring these youths forward so the music can continue!" - en voor tracks als titelnummer 'Flat Bridge', 'Anjara', 'Pandemic' en afsluiter 'Zah Zah' nodigde hij dan ook respectievelijk tenorsaxofonist Oshane Love en trompettist Okeil McIntyre uit (beiden ook actief bij het blazerscollectief TopBrass).

Dean kent natuurlijk zijn klassiekers en dus puilt de tracklist uit van herwerkingingen van bekende nummers als 'Party Time' van The Heptones (hier 'This Is Happiness'), 'Danger In Your Eyes' van Don Evans & The Paragons ('I Command You'), 'Declaration Of Rights van The Abyssinians ('Over You') of Burning Spear's 'Foggy Road' ('Hope Road'). Classic Dean Fraser sax-vibes!
