Jesse Royal - Royal (Easy Star Records)

Een breed pallet aan genres dus, maar wel steeds onmiskenbaar Jamaicaans: "On this album you will hear elements of hip-hop, jazz, blues, afrobeats and dancehall, but reggae is the backbone that holds everything in place. We can't run from the authentic energy and vibes bestowed upon us by the Most High, because that is what makes us great; there are things that you learn along the way, but greatness is when you know yourself. I was way tamer of an individual on my previous album. This album is much freer. We tried interesting melodies that I probably didn't trust before and I expressed things that I typically wouldn't, so that's also why we called this project 'Royal'. Because reggae is truth music; we burn certain fire, but we don't want to be labeled as people who only do one thing because music doesn't really have a specific language, mood or a message, the artist imparts that.".

Opener 'High Tide Or Low' begint met een citaat uit Proverbs 18:2: "A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his own opinion!" (een sneer naar de sociale media waar zowat iedereen tegenwoordig denkt de waarheid in pacht te hebben?). Het nummer zelf, een duet met Samory I die voor een soulvolle noot zorgt, is een soort geloofsbelijdenis waarin Jesse stelt: "High tide or low, I'll never let Jah go!".

Voor 'Lion Order' sloeg Royal de handen ineen met Protoje en het nummer voelt ook echt aan als een productie van die laatste. In het nummer zorgt Protoje bovendien voor een leuke tekstuele knipoog naar 'The Lion King' met de lyrics: "Ah Who? Who is a Scar to a Simba? When you learn dem lessens hope you remember! Hyenas will try divide brothers, so my eyes open, deciphering these others…".

Wat afrobeats krijgen we met 'Dirty Money', een aanklacht tegen corruptie en politieke machtshonger, en dan kan Stonebwoy natuurlijk niet op het appel ontbreken. De perfecte antithese voor dit nummer is dan weer 'Rich Forever', waarin ook Vybz Kartel zijn opwachting maakt en stelt: "Rich forever… Family mi treasure, in a system that breeds depression, who will ease the tension? Everyman fi dem self, cheese intention, meaning greens that evil invention. Matter how me teach dem need detention! No humanity, lost in vanity, walls of politics, religious policies, burn dem fallacies!". Jesse Royal: "The song is a conversation about the restoration of our royalty, reclaiming dignity. We are all carefully crafted creatures of the universe and there's nothing that can hold us back. We're rich forever!".

En ook in afsluiter 'Strongest Link (Do My Best)', een combinatie met ex-Raging Fyah frontman Kumar, duikt de kwalijke invloed van geld nog een laatste keer op: "While I do my best, Jah Jah do the rest… It's funny how money, money turns friends into foes!".

Het anthem op 'Royal' is zonder de minste twijfel 'Black', een ode aan de zwarte cultuur waarvan we u de volledige tekst zeker niet willen onthouden:

Voor een intieme persoonlijke noot zorgt Jesse dan weer met de soulvolle ballade 'Home' waarin hij zich tot zijn twee dochtertjes, Yali en Korus Grey, richt met de troostende woorden: "When daddy's not home and you feel alone, don't get too lonely cause Jah love surround. When I'm not around and you feel alone, I am the silence in the absence of sound."

Nog een persoonlijke favoriet op 'Royal' is het aanstekelijke 'Natty Pablo', waarmee Royal vooral wat typische stereotiepen rond Rastafari de wereld wilde uithelpen.

Jesse heeft natuurlijk ook een hele schare vrouwelijke fans en met tracks als 'Natty Dread', 'Differences' (over een toxische relatie) en 'Like Dat', een duet met Runkus over vrouwen die constant spelletjes spelen, komt Royal ook hen op dit nieuwe album ruimschoots tegemoet.

Uitstekende release van een artiest die duidelijk blijft groeien en evolueren!
