Niceness - Realize (Eigen Beheer)

De naam van de band mag u eigenlijk beschouwen als een veramerikanisering van de Jamaicaanse patois-term "irie". In de rangen van Niceness zijn onder andere een organische landbouwer, een life coach, een specialist in permacultuur, een boeddhistische bodybuilder, een muziekleraar, een boomverzorger en een doctor in de psychologie terug te vinden, en het mag dan ook niet verbazen dat het repertoire van de band voornamelijk focust op persoonlijke, socio-politieke en ecologische problemen. De band beschikt met John White (alt-saxofoon) en Danny D'Alessandro (tenor-saxofoon) over een uitstekende blazerssectie, maar het is toch vooral het aparte jazzy stemgeluid van frontvrouw en songwriter Koral Delatierra die de muziek van Niceness, waarin reggae al eens overvloeit in ska (titelnummer 'Realize', 'Build No Walls'), soul, funk, Latin-jazz (het Spaanstalige 'La Hora') of hip-hop, een heel eigen sound geeft.

Gevraagd naar de titel van deze nieuwe langspeler antwoordde Koral: "This album is dedicated to all our brothers and sisters, past, present, and future, who show us that a just and sustainable world is possible. May we continue to strive to leave our children a more peaceful, healthy, and prosperous world. We chose the album title because we understand that to realize is to understand clearly. There is so much at stake in the world that needs our profound realization. The songs on this album are our meditations on niceness. They are straightforward lyrics and grooves to serve as clear reminders to realize what is most important. We feel blessed to have this opportunity to share these songs and we hope they will be as transformative for others as they have been for us!".

We onthouden zeker nummers als 'Small Things', dat begint als een eco-anthem maar waarmee de band eigenlijk wilt aangeven dat grote veranderingen altijd beginnen met kleine dingen (wat dit nummer eigenlijk een tot een perfect campagnelied maakt voor klimaatactiviste Greta Thunberg), het anti-Trump statement 'Build No Walls' of nog het autobiografische (?) 'Story Of A Girl' waarin Kora Delatierra verhaalt over een meisje op zoek naar zichzelf en de hordes die ze daarbij moet nemen, maar het zijn toch vooral de lyrics van opener en hoopvolle hart onder de riem 'Better Than You Know' die ons echt wisten te raken; een nummer dat wellicht niemand in deze donkere periode onberoerd zal laten en waarvan we u de volledige tekst dan ook niet willen onthouden:
