The Late Ones - Lately EP (Easy Star Records)

De band werd oorspronkelijk opgericht in Laie op Hawaii, maar ondertussen opereert het trio vanuit Gardena in Californië. The Lost Ones, een bandnaam die verwijst naar muzikale en andere helden waaruit ze nog dagelijks inspiratie putten, gaande van Bob Marley en Tupac Shakur over Jimi Hendrix en John Lennon tot Kobe Bryant en Chadwick Boseman, lijken op deze 4 tracks tellende 'Lately' EP het perfecte evenwicht gevonden te hebben tussen hip-hop en reggae.

De EP opent met het uitstekende 'Babylon Exists', een nummer dat begeleid wordt door een videoclip waarin de bandleden te zien zijn toen ze afgelopen zomer deelnamen aan een Black Lives Matter protestmars in Los Angeles ter nagedachtenis van George Floyd. Tau Avei: "'Babylon Exists' is a straight shot at the evil and brutality that we feel from the government and police. This song is an anthem stating that evil is real, and until we all can unite and figure out how to truly put an end to it, it's gonna live on forever. The past year has been crazy, and the song is so relevant to what's been going on!". Onze persoonlijke favoriet uit de tracklist is echter het uitmuntende 'Brother's Keeper'. Liefhebbers van de betere hip-hop kunnen dan weer hun hart ophalen aan 'Troubled Streets' en afsluiten doet het trio met het dubby 'The Noose', een nummer waarin het trio op treffende wijze beschrijft wat het betekent om zwart geboren te worden in de Verenigde Staten, met een leuk woordspelletje tussen "noose" (strop) en "news"; een lyric die we u toch niet willen onthouden:   I was born with a noose round I neck 50 lashes pon I back, yeah In a place called Amerikkka Stars and Stripes was my breakfast Cotton mouthed and dying of thirst It took me nah time to learn The noose is tight But shall we fight?
