'Alpha Boys' School': Cradle Of Jamaican Music

Het boek is een collaboratief project van de Engelse journalist en muziekliefhebber Adam Reeves en de Amerikaanse auteur en docent Heather Augustyn. Die eerste had in 2007 in Londen al een reünieconcert met onder andere 'Deadly' Headley Bennett, Karl 'Cannonball' Bryan, Vin Gordon, Lester Sterling, Sparrow Martin, Eddie 'Tan Tan' Thornton en Rico Rodriguez gefilmd en werkte aanvankelijk van daaruit aan een documentaire over Alpha. Maar omdat dat project om velerlei redenen te complex bleek, rijpte langzaam het idee voor een boek. Al willen we hier nog wel even meegeven dat Reeves ondertussen alweer samenwerkt met de Amerikaanse documentairemakers Daniel Junge en Davis Coombe. Hun filmproject rond Alpha is zo goed als rond, alleen de nodige fondsen voor de muziekrechten en het gebruik van visueel archiefmateriaal ontbreken nog. Wordt vermoedelijk vervolgd.

Omdat Adam het niet meteen zag zitten om dat titanenwerk alleen aan te pakken besloot hij beroep te doen op de Amerikaanse schrijfster Heather Augystyn, waarvan hij wist dat ze al voeling had met het onderwerp dankzij het onderzoek dat ze had verricht voor 'Don Drummond: The Genius And tragedy Of The World's Greatest Trombonist', haar boek uit 2013 over Skatalites-trombonist Don Drummond.

Naast een voorwoord door de Engelse deejay, radiopresentator en reggaegoeroe Sir David Rodigan, een uitgebreide geschiedenis van de school en een uitgebreide biografie van zuster Marie Ignatius Davies - 64 (!) jaar lang verantwoordelijk voor de muziekafdeling van de school - bevat het boek meer dan 45 hoofdstukken gewijd aan bekende (Tommy McCook, Bobby Ellis, Don Drummond, Rico Rodriguez, Cedric 'Im' Brooks…) en minder bekende (Bertie King, Sonny Grey, Joe Harriott, Vernon 'Von Mullo' Möller, Raymond Harper…) Alpharians die na hun opleiding in de school carrière maakten in de muziekwereld en zo het Jamaicaanse muzieklandschap mee vormgaven.

Ook uw dienaar mocht trouwens een bescheiden bijdrage leveren in de vorm van fragmenten uit een interview met trompettist Johnny 'Dizzy' Moore. Helemaal objectief zijn we dus niet wat dit boek betreft, maar we hopen hier toch genoeg redenen opgesomd te hebben om 'Alpha Boys' School: Cradle Of Jamaican Music' in huis te halen, maar moesten die toch niet volstaan dan volgen hieronder nog enkele aanbevelingen van hooggeplaatste eminenties uit het reggaewereldje die u zeker wel zult kennen:
