Lord Echo - Harmonies (Soundway Records)

Echo is ondertussen alweer aan zijn derde langspeler toe en werkt altijd min of meer volgens hetzelfde concept en dat zowel visueel (de hoezen van zijn albums) als auditief: "Many people are concerned with always trying something different, but I'm interested in trying to make the same thing again and again. It's a challenge. How many ideas can you squeeze out of one concept, out of one sonic palette? This is one of the restrictions I apply to myself. I tried to use the same instruments and approach as the last record. I made the cover in exactly the same format. Of course, it's inevitable that i twill come out different in spite of this approach, ut that's not the point!". Het resultaat is een pareltje van een album waarop Echo op magistrale wijze reggae, rocksteady, dub, disco, makossa ('C90 Eternal', 'Makossa No. 3') en soul in elkaar laat overvloeien, met als absolute uitschieters wellicht de lovers rock van 'Low To The Street' feat. Lisa Tomlins eindigend in een geweldige orgelsolo, 'Note From Home', waarin Toby Laing's zwoele stem ons deed denken aan Sade en afsluiter 'I love Music', opnieuw met Lisa Tomlins, en een heerlijke lovers rock cover van de soul classic van The O'Jays. Het enige wat wij ons bij het beluisteren van 'Harmonies' betreurden, was dat we Lord Echo nu pas ontdekt hebben!
