Some beautiful Nyahbingi songs on this record. Nyahbingi is eigenlijk een soort voorloper geweest van de rootsmusic en wordt vooral gevormd door (in hoofdzaak toch) gebruik te maken van Nyahbingi drums die samenvloeien met rasta-chant. Deze Nyabingi songs worden, ook nu nog vooral gespeeld tijdens de rasta gatherings, "grounations", in Jamaica. Nyahbingi vindt zijn oorsprong tijdens de jaren 30 (in Jamaica althans - maar is eigenlijk ontstaan in Centraal-Afrika, als enige drukkingmiddel tegen de raciale overheersing door de blanke man destijds).
Momenteel betekent dit vooral in Jamaica: "Death to all black or white oppressors!". Door het zingen van rasta chants, het roken van "spiritual and religious ganja" en door gebruik te maken van hun prachtige drums verzetten zij zich op die manier tegen elke vorm van inmenging of onderdrukking van hun geloof en geloven zij op deze manier Babylon te kunnen verslaan. Eigenlijk kan je ook zeggen dat dit een soort folklore uit JA is, die momenteel heel moeilijk te onderscheiden en volledig verweven is met rootsmusic, hoewel er een duidelijk verschil blijft. De invloed van Nyabingi op rootsmusic is er altijd geweest. Nyabingi people were the first to believe and welcome the Rasta people, en dat hoor je dus ook wel in de roots music.They also praise and sing about H.I.M. but the big difference is that, although them nyahbingi had a great influence on reggae music, they have always lacked commercial potential.
The rhythm which is even much more slower then the reggae music is basically only produced by hand drums. De prachtige sound was destijds enorm belangrijk bij de ontwikkeling van de reggae (Bob Marley, Horace Andy, Ken Boothe...) but even nowadays kan je nog de invloeden van de nyahbingi drums terugvinden bij jonge artiesten als Anthony B, Capleton, Shabba of Buju Banton. The first song Ras Michael is presenting here is a real nyahbingi song. Beautiful, although mi don't really like the woman's chant. But mi love the drums! The song which takes about 10 to 15 minutes and has the traditional songs and praises for H.I.M. - Jah Rastafari. The second and third song, 'Haile Selassie Is The Chapel' (a mystic remake of Elvis Presley's 'Crying In The Chapel', ooit tot een rastalied gemaakt door The Wailers) and 'All Things Bright & Beautiful' have the same nyahbingi spirit but are already more influenced by reggae and roots music, zeker wat de instrumenten betreft.
'Sweet Jamaica' is een sublieme version van de Studio One classic riddim Rockfort Rock. Nice & easy, vier keer achter elkaar. Eerst een lofsong op het eiland, daarna de geschiedenis van Jamaica en in de derde version (allemaal subtiel verschillend) vertelt Ras Michael de geschiedenis van de reggae. Nog altijd over dezelfde riddim. Maar geloof me, hij verveelt geen moment. En daar dan nog eens the same song dubwise achteraan. Ook 'No Smoke Without Fire' (Real Rock style & fashion) wordt hernomen. De crew moet veel plezier beleefd hebben aan deze plaat. Sly & Robbie on drums and bass, Earl 'Chinna' Smith on guitar, keyboards by Organ D and Robert Lyn. Anyway a good album, perhaps you can discuss about the woman's chant, but very interesting because of them nyahbingi contributions. Bob Marley once said about this man: "Ras Michael? He is a nyahbingi and a good rasta. Can you do better?" Even nowadays, he is still loved by the Marley family and has contributed on some Ziggy and Steven Marley songs. Nyahbingi, you love it or you hate it, but never forget: this is an important part of rastafari livity. Jammer dat de moderne hiphop-achtige sleeve totaal niet past bij de klassieke inhoud van deze CD. Uit commerciële overwegingen? Totally wrong. Nyahbingi-music is net het tegendeel van money business.
