Protoje - The Art Of Acceptance (Ineffable Records/In.Digg.Nation Collective)

Wat de titel van het album betreft, liet Protoje zich ontvallen: "After 'In Search Of Lost Time', in the COVID-period, that time of deep introspection, a lot was going on in life and two things stood out to me: acceptance and forgiveness. I wanted to expand on those things, because I felt it would help me to heal and move forward. And obviously acceptance comes before forgiveness! I wanted to dive into that. The music has subtle hints of acceptance in each song. The whole project gives that vibe."

Voor 'Sword And Shield', een aanklacht tegen de gewelddadige samenleving in Jamaica en de de spirituele houvast die Rastafari daartegen kan bieden, samplede Protoje flarden uit een speech die Peter Tosh in 1983 op het One Love Concert gaf. Wij hadden het echter meer voor het thematisch in dezelfde lijn liggende 'Reference', waarin Protoje ons in enkele regels een hele geschiedenisles geeft:

De hoesafbeelding voor 'The Art Of Acceptance' doet sommigen wellicht denken aan Monument Valley in de Verenigde Staten, maar eigenlijk is dit een artistieke herwerking door Shanelle Davis van een foto die Protoje nam tijdens een bezoek aan de Danakilwoestijn in Ethiopië. 

Voor 'The Art Of Acceptance' werkte Protoje deze keer zowel samen met Damian als Stephen Marley en daar was hij zelf niet geheel ontevreden over: "Ragga and Gong… To have them man there bless my music, I can't ask for nothing more! If I never get one more feature, me good!"

Maar daar houdt he qua vocale gasten op 'The Art Of Acceptance' nog lang niet op. Al meteen in opener 'Something I Said' is Jesse Royal te horen, met Pressure Busspipe nam hij het vrij donkere 'The Locusts' op en met Masicka is er 'Ting Loud', een over een nineties-style dancehallriddim die zo uit de stal van Steelie & Clievie of Gussie Clarke lijkt te komen en ons meteen terugvoerde naar Aswad-albums als 'Too Wicked' of 'Firesticks'. En dan is er natuurlijk nog 'Goddess', een combinatie met Shenseea die een echte match made in heaven blijkt. Hoogtepuntje! 

Het meest persoonlijke nummer op dit album is zonder twijfel 'In Your Corner', waarin naast de stem van Protoje's vader ook nog die van zijn ondertussen overleden grootmoeder te horen is: "I started (that song) before my grandma passed. There's an interlude of my dad talking at one of my birthday parties and my grandma is there (as well). It's very nostalgic."

Diegenen die op zoek zouden zijn naar iets herkenbaars op 'The Art Of Acceptance' kunnen we meegeven dat 'At We Feet' losjes gebaseerd zou zijn op Supercat's 'Dem No Worry We', en dat Protoje voor '1000 Lashes' een vertraagde herwerking van de riddim van de Black Uhuru-klassieker 'Party In Session' gebruikte. In 'Love Overflow', een nummer over kiezen voor liefde, innerlijke groei en spirituele kracht in plaats van voor haat en wraak, zit met de zinsnede: "Love and hate can never be friends!" dan weer een knipoog naar de Dennis Brown-klassieker 'Love And Hate'.

Besluiten doet Protoje met 'Ten Times Around The Sun', waarin de saxofoon van Dean Fraser en de trombone van Henry 'Matic Horns' Tenyue een belangrijke bijrol spelen.

'The Art Of Acceptance' verschijnt op vinyl, CD en zelfs op cassette, een evolutie die wij zeker toejuichen.
