Ce vendredi 3 décembre, pour la première fois, 4 sound systems belges se feront face dans une compétition : le soundclash. Voici la présentation de ces 4 sounds, mais avant tout quelques mots sur ce qu'est un clash.
Le SOUNDCLASH est une tradition jamaïcaine qui s'est exportée dans le monde entier et a inspiré d'autres types de compétitions entre DJ's. Ce qui rend ce type de compétition intéressant c'est que c'est le public qui décide qui est le vainqueur. C'est l'interaction entre les talents du MC et la qualité des "dubplates" qui est déterminant pour se démarquer de son adversaire et remporter le trophée.
Les dubplates sont également typiques de la tradition musicale jamaïcaine. Il s'agit de morceaux originaux qui sont ré-enregistrées par l'artiste et avec des paroles inédites qui font la promotion du sound system ou du DJ qui les joue.
Le soundclash est en général composé de plusieurs "rounds" de 10 à 15 minutes pour chaque sound. A la fin, les deux sounds sélectionnés s'affrontent en finale. C'est le duel final qu'on appelle dub-fi-dub.
Le 3 décembre au Vooruit à Gand, quatre sounds systems belges monteront sur le ring. Ils prendront part à la toute première édition de cette compétition reggae/dancehall.

Most memorable clash you ever seen or witnessed?
Beatstreet sound: We grew up with clash cassettes, and our favorite clash tape is King Addies vs Bass Oddyssey in Portmore from 1994. The most memorable clash we attended ourselves probably remains Far West vs Runn Sound in Rotterdam (2000). In the juggling rounds both sounds appeared well matched, and in the tune fi tune Runn Sound took it with an Eddy Wally dub, an unforgettable moment indeed

Most memorable dance you ever played?
Beatstreet sound: Defend Your Sound in the Machine in Leuven (2009) definitely was a night to remember in Belgian dancehall history with eight sounds playing some of their best dubs on one night. Playing in the Bounce Dancehall at Reggae Geel 2010 was very nice too.

Daktari sound: 2 much 2 remember! I guess the gig in Democrazy (Gent - Reinaertstraat) somewhere between 1990 and 95 or reggae Geel.

Why did you accept the clash-invitation?
Beatstreet sound: It seemed a nice chance to step up into the clash game. Too many sounds don't want to clash because they don't want to loose. Hopefully this kind of initiative will change that attitude and will bring a more open clash atmosphere. Soundclash is an important and exciting part of dancehall that still is ignored all too often in Belgium. Many sounds have a big dubbox, so it's time to do something with it. When we were asked for the Beljam Cup Clash we grabbed the oppotunity with both hands.
