dub_cmd & Sister Maki - Way To Zion I EP (Dub-O-Phonic)

By Jah Rebel

About a year after the release of 'Moonsteppa', his debut EP for Dub-O-Phonic, and 'Deeper Understanding', a collaboration with SistaSara that same year, UK-based producer Gabriel Ufir aka dub_cmd returns to the Cypriot label for 'Way To Zion I', the first part of what should eventually become a diptych.

For this 5 track EP, dub_cmd joined forces with Sister Maki, a Japanese reggae artist from Osaka. It resulted in 3 vocal cuts and two instrumentals/dubs, with Maki alternating between English (opener 'Jah Meditation') and Japanese ('Moonlight'). The somewhat ethereal voice of Sister Maki needs some getting used to and will certainly not be everyone's cup of tea, but it does give this EP its special character and together with the melodica work of dub_cmd it all gets quite close to the legendary Far East sound of master Augustus Pablo.
