The Roots Engine - Perpetual Travel (Self-published)

The Roots Engine is an eight piece band from the French capital with 'Perpetual Travel' presenting its second long player. Vocal linchpins of the band are Guillaume and Enora, and it's especially the latter that turns out to have one hell of a voice and on top of that also plays a mean flute.

The band mixes reggae with influences from jazz ('Soul Hunter'), dub and soul. On this album, 12 tracks recorded at the Wise Studio under the expert guidance of Fabwise, you should definitely check the aforementioned 'Soul Hunter', for which Enora really pulls out all the stops, and 'Roots Diva', in which Enora states: "I'm not a Rasta, I don't smoke ganja, I don't praise Jah Jah, no I'm the roots diva!". That being said, we found the rest of the tracks on 'Perpetual Travel' almost just as convincing, all featuring the band's excellent horn section (Baptiste - tenor saxophone, Mikael - alto saxophone, and JB - trumpet). And oh yeah, they shot a somewhat quirky clip for 'Another Reality'... As the French would say: "Véritable découverte!"
