Various Artists - Dub Affairs Vol. 1, 2 & 3 (ROHS! Records)

By Jah Rebel

Berlin's ROHS! Records is an initiative of Andrea Porcu, a Sardinian producer who, after a stay in Belgium ended up in the German capital.

The 'Dub Affairs' compilations mainly seem to focus on ambient and techno dub, allowing the listener to quietly drift off and for which Andrea, among others, collaborated with dub makers like Zzzzra (France), Biodub (Germany), Xoki (Denmark), Subset (New Zealand), Hieronymus Dub Sounds (Denmark), Hemisphere Dub (France) and Upwellings* (France). All names that we weren't really familiar with but prove a guarantee for quality none the less.

The label celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and highlights the occasion with the release of a new third volume in the series. Where the first compilation, dating back to 2015, was still completely instrumental, 'Dub Affairs Vol. 2' already featured the voice of Andy Mintaka aka Bodyverse in 'I Segreti Di Una Generazione Di Mezzo' by Ondarituale (the duo Bodyverse forms with ROHS! Records boss Andrea Porcu), and 'Dub Affairs Vol. 3' continues down the same path. Bodyverse again features in the trip hop-flavored '? 4 Love' (the Japanese ? symbol stands for "go"), for which Ondarituale collaborated with Japanese producer Takafumi Noda aka Mystic Tribe, for 'The Border' Turin-based producer Babe Roots joined forces with Berliner Milly James, and for 'Ital Swing' Norwegian Mind over MIDI invited veteran Paul St. Hilaire aka Tikiman.

We'll let you discover the first two volumes at your own leisure, but on 'Dub Affairs Vol. 3', it were the trippy 'Now You Sleep' by the Bosnian producer Jah Forcefield, and the nyahbinghi-inspired 'Wagga Town' by Danish Dub Across Borders, impressed yours truly the most. Truly fascinating exploration of the Berlin dub scene!
