Various Artists - King Jammy's Dancehall 3 & 4 (Dub Store Records)

The third volume of this five part series was given 'Hard Dancehall Murderer 1983-1991' as a subtitle and focuses on a number of killer tunes helping King Jammy claim victory at local sound clashes time and time again. With sound engineer Bobby 'Digital' Dixon by his side, Jammy turned artists like Admiral Bailey ('Mi Ah The Danger'), Chaka Demus, Little Twitch, Half Pint, Tenor Saw, Nitty Gritty ('Rub A Dub Kill You') and of course Wayne Smith ('Like A Dragon') into true hit-machines.    Part four, 'Hard Dancehall Lover 1983-1991', can simply be summarized as "digital goes romantic". What no one could have imagined was that Jammy's mechanical sounding computerized riddims appeared to lend themselves perfectly for reggae versions of pop songs from the American charts like Chris De Burgh's 'Lady In Red' or Tracy Chapman's 'Baby Can I Hold You'. In the track list pioneers of this "new" lovers genre like Chuck Turner ('Love Affair', 'Sugar Me') or Conroy Smith ('Ah No Me She Love'), but also already established names like Gregory Isaacs ('Steal A Little Love'), Frankie Paul ('Ready For Your Loving'), Sugar Minott ('Conscious Lover') or Admiral Tibet ('Running From Reality'). We're already looking forward to that fifth and last part!
