Jah Legacy - Time Is Now (Khanti Records/Harmonia Mundi)

By Jah Rebel

Jah Legacy is essentially the story of Manu (vocals, guitar) and Charley aka ChaCha (guitar, backing vocals), two childhood friends who grew up in the same neighborhood in St. Raphael, a coastal town in the French Var region.

Together with drummer Julien and bassist Laurent, they've been serving up their own blend of jazz (check the "guitare manouche" in 'Daddy' and 'Jealousy'), rock, blues ('Rejoice', 'Inside You'), soul and, of course, reggae, ever since 2013. In 2015, there was already a 5 track EP called 'Inner Revolution', now followed by 'Time Is Now', the band's first full-fledged album. Content-wise, 'Creation Is To Share' caught our ear , with Manu singing: "America is not for the Americans, Africa is not for the Africans, Asia is not for the Asians ... All I see is this whole wide world as a place for everyone.", which seems a statement against the well-known poem by Marcus Garvey, 'Africa For The Africans'. Unfortunately lead vocalist Manu can't hide a slight French accent when singing in English (in that regard, check out the strange pronunciation of "jealousy" in 'Jealousy'), but apart from that, we really enjoyed the debut effort of this foursome from the south of France.
