Teddy Dan - Message From Ethiopia (Jah Works Records)

Teddy Dan was born in Trelawny, Jamaica, but spent most of his life in the United Kingdom and at the beginning of this century migrated to the rasta-enclave Shashamane in Ethiopia. During his wanderings he ran into the members of the Irie Vibes Band somewhere in West Flanders; a chance meeting that soon evolved into a fertile friendship and working relationship.

In 2013 there was already the live album 'Live In Beljam', now followed by this 'Message From Ethiopia'. That turns out to be an excellent roots album; Irie Vibes band proves a rock-solid backing band, Jah Rej provides a deep sound and the color of Teddy Dan's voice reminded yours truly of that of Kiddus I. In opener 'Jah Is Watching' I Man T and Ras Cloud offer some vocal support and Tim 'Irielodica' Brion's melodica can be heard. Elsewhere on the album Hornsman Coyote's trombone and Mohsen 'Saleh' Zayyani's violin ('Troddin Jah Troddin Way', 'That's Not The Way') provide some extra depth. Classic but very solid roots album amateurs of the genre will gladly add to their collection.
