Rocky Dawuni - Branches Of The Same Tree (Cumbancha)

In his native Ghana Rocky Dawuni is a real star and in the United States, where he's been living and working for quite a while now (Dawuni married the American photographer/producer Cary Sullivan), he's also made a name for himself.

In recent years Rocky's songs were used in computer games like FIFA/FIFA WORLD CUP ('African Thriller', also added to the track list of 'Branches Of The Same Tree') and The Sims, and in the soundtrack to popular television series like 'ER', 'Weeds' and 'Dexter' the odd track by the Ghanaian reggae singer also featured. 'Branches Of The Same Tree' is already Dawuni's sixth album to date and offers a pleasant mix of roots ('Children Of Abraham', 'We Never Stop'), gospel (opener 'Shine A Light') and highlife/afrobeat ('The Sign' and be sure to check the Bob Marley-cover 'Get Up, Stand Up'). The ukulele in closing track 'Island Girl' unwillingly reminded yours truly of Joshua Alo's Hawaiian gospel-reggae.
