Petrol was packed at midnight and the walls were sweating already. The crowd was getting in the mood on Keytown Sound's selection, after a warm-up by Conscious Sound we missed. An hour later, impatience started to rise as rumours that Gyptian was nowhere to be found were spreading amongst the fans... Luckily, the reggae superstar finally showed up and gave his public a great performance.
Gyptian is currently touring to promote his fourth album, 'Sex, Love And Reggae', released nearly a year ago, and it was definitely his motto for the night as well.
He launched the show with some of his ladies tunes, but Gyptian has multiple facets, and the conscious singer, who listeners first came to know through his 2005 breakthrough hit 'Serious Times', knows his public: it was time to cool down with some classic reggae tunes like Culture's 'Jah Jah See Dem A Come' (usually sung in combination with Sugar Roy and Conrad Crystal) or Gregory Isaacs' 'My Number One'. He, then, rinsed us out with more lovers and dancehall hits from his latest album, 'Sex, Love And Reggae', his singles 'Overtime' or 'Wine Slow', and of course the sultry island pop smash that topped charts globally in 2010, 'Hold You'.
After a medley of dancehall and r&b covers ('Man A Bad Man', 'No Diggity'…), his touring partner Nitty Kutchie joined him on stage for more dancehall madness and an impressive interaction with the public. Finally, Gyptian ended the show with his up-tempo hits, soca, moombahton… the global bass sound that has taken over the world, Jamaica included, since Major Lazer's 'Bumaye'. But the party wasn't done and after a quick 180° turnaround, you could face the soundsystem stage where the mighty Civalizee was already in action, followed by Holland's Foundation Sound and the local I&I Sound to close this big musical night.
