For nearly two decades now VP Records has been gathering the best and most significate tunes burning the reggae and dancehall charts on their annual 'Reggae Gold' compilation.
This year we got a balance between the genres as half of the tracks give you a taste of the flow of new sounds coming from afrobeat and trap that became viral in the dancehall realm, well blended with some sweet reggae riddims to complete the collection.
The compilation kicks off in full carnival vibe with the over played 'Watch Out For This (Bumaye)', another bomb dropped by Major Lazer with Busy Signal on the riddim and a real booster for this long hot summer! Next is QQ with 'Jack Hammer', a carnival anthem, then Spice riding the Boom Box riddim with her unique style, followed by Sean Paul and Konshens bragging that the girls 'Want Dem All'. 'Reggae Gold' returns to the olden days of dancehall with Assassin's 'Sekkle and Cease', an amazing interpretation over a remixed Sleng Teng riddim. In 'Catch Me', Fay Ann Lyons gives us a strong request in the soca flavoured 'Hands Up And Catch Me if I Fall'. The second part of the compilation features reggae tracks from a number of well-known artists: Gyptian and Melanie's join forces for 'Talking About Love', Fiona does it 'One More Time', Jah Cure beares his soul in 'All Of Me' and Maxi Priest prepares for a romantic getaway in 'Holiday'.
Etana tells us about the important things in life with the lead single from her forthcoming album produced by Clive Hunt, 'I Rise'. Closing track is Romain Virgo's 'Soul Provider', a killer over the Brighter Days riddim. Reggae Gold 2014 yet again proves to be a must have for all amateurs of reggae and dancehall wanting to keep up with current trends and evolutions.
