Blacker Dread goes down!

However, since manager Steve Burnett-Martin, aka Blacker Dread, was convicted to two and a half years' actual imprisonment because of his involvement in a money-laundering operation, it seems as if his shop is doomed to disappear too. The premises have been emptied and the windows taped up, and a few A4-sheets  simply state: "Oops …".

Lorna Martin, Steve's daughter, used her job in the marketing company IMCD to divert money to various accounts, one of which was Blacker Dread's. Between August 2011 and August 2012, Blacker Dread received no less than £ 230,411 (€ 286,855).

Blacker Dread was regarded as one of the pillars of the Caribbean community in Brixton and until last year he was part of the festival organisation of Brixton Splash. The fact that a crowd-funding page was set up for that festival because it is facing financial problems has created a lot of bad blood, but at the same time quite a few people are voicing their support for Blacker Dread on the internet.
