12 Tribes Of Mars - Hidden Sun (Dub-O-Phonic)

Originally, the band focused on a repertoire of Sly & Robbie covers and Skatalites classics, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dereviacenko began to push things further into more exploratory territory.

As he puts it: "Each member of 12 Tribes Of Mars comes from a different country, and each of us is rooted in a different scene of the city's music scene. We all play groove-based music, but from different points of view. Together we form a band with reggae music as the main glue, using improvisation as a driving force. 'Hidden Sun' to me is a symbol of how our music kicks off from reggae, ska and dub, but then sounds as if it was there all the time!"

Even the band's name reflects the duality Dereviacenko is aiming for: on one hand, the reggae connection through the Twelve Tribes of Israel movement; on the other, the cosmic philosophy and futurism of Sun Ra's jazz, symbolized by Mars: "Sun Ra's ideology was that all Black people, to escape poverty in the 1960s, were supposed to board a spaceship to Saturn. So, I kind of reimagined that if we were to go to Mars, we could create our own tale of 12 Tribes, our own tale of reggae, dub, ska, jazz and so on.".

With 'Hidden Sun', 12 Tribes Of Mars carve out a musical universe of their own, where ska, dub and jazz collide in fascinating ways.
