Leroy Smart - Musical Don + Echo Minott - Familiar Face + Tamlins - Love Divine (VP Records)

Leroy Smart was clearly in his element with the digital riddims Steely & Clevie crafted for 'Musical Don', originally released in 1988. The track list leans heavily towards love tunes such as 'She Loves To Dance', 'I Want Your Love' and 'Me Nah Leave You', but our personal highlights are ganja anthem 'Collie Man' (set to a digital reworking of the Stalag riddim) and 'Worries Tonight', voiced over the Heavy Rock riddim.

Echo Minott recorded 'Familiar Face' in 1986. Not every track has stood the test of time equally well, but 'Don't Lock Me Out Mama' and 'Eyes Of An Angel' are definite standouts. In the former, Echo pleads with his mother and father not to lock him out after coming home far too late from a sound system dance, while in 'Eyes Of An Angel' he takes aim at a certain type of woman: 'You've got the eyes of an angel, but your heart is like a Jezebel, go to hell, go to hell!"

Finally, fans of Jamaican vocal harmony groups are treated to 'Love Divine' by Tamlins, which had already seen a CD reissue on Heartbeat Records back in 1989. The album is packed with syrupy love songs like 'Love Is Not A Gamble' and title track 'Love Divine', and closes in style with a lovers rock rendition of 'Hang On To Your Love', a worldwide hit for Sade in 1984.
