Clashsounds getting ready fi war! (NL/FR)
Op 2 december is het weer tijd voor muzikale oorlog! Voor de tweede keer organiseert Democrazy i.s.m. Reggae.be de Beljam Cup Clash in de Vooruit, Gent. 4 Sounds, strictly dubplates, one winner! De sounds die dit jaar de arena betreden zijn Jahwed Family uit Comines, Strange Fruit uit Bornem, Heartbeat Movement uit Dilbeek en Daktari uit Gent. Laatstgenoemde kennen we van vorig jaar, maar de andere drie zijn nog niet bij iedereen bekend. Een tijdje geleden vroegen we hen een vragenlijst in te vullen, hoe ze dat hebben gedaan lees je hier!
Etana: "I felt the young people listening to my music needed to know exactly what is going on!"
Etana is populair en haar mix van roots reggae & r&b slaat duidelijk aan, zozeer zelfs dat ze op amper enkel maanden na haar optreden op Reggae Geel alweer op Belgische bodem staat (Vooruit 08/11). Maar voor het zover is schotelen we u graag nog even volgend gesprek voor.
Damian Marley: "Uiteindelijk komen we allemaal uit Afrika!"
31 augustus 2011(MO*) Damian Marley was bijna drie toen zijn wereldberoemde vader, Bob Marley, in 1981 stierf. “Junior Gong” belichaamt en vernieuwt zijn vaders muzikale erfenis, maar zet ook het politieke en spirituele werk van Bob “Tuff Gong” Marley verder. De terugkeer naar Afrika blijft een centraal thema, al verloopt die in de 21ste eeuw niet langer per boot.
De Marley'kes: "Soms durven ze ons al wel eens aanzien als een soort Vlaamse Wailers en dat zijn we natuurlijk niet!"
De Marley'kes spelen volgende week zo maar even twee keer ten dans, een ideale gelegenheid voor de publicatie van een interviewtje dachten wij zo.
Assassin aka Agent Sasco: "I try and speak to the hardcore authentic dancehall and reggae massive!"
Assassin aka Agent Sasco is one of the realest and strongest artists in the dancehall. He’s not put as much in the spotlights as other artists because he isn’t producing much “hype” music. We were lucky to have him live in Belgium at the Reggae Geel Festival 2011 and he took some time to answer an exclusive interview for reggae.be.
Stephen Marley: "Herb is freedom!"
Finally live on stage in Europe, Stephen Marley also took some time to reason with us about music, rastafari and herbs. 'We have to transcend Bob's message to the next generation.' Interview with a rastaman who is very conscious about language (as are most thruthful rastamen.)
Don Corleon & Protoje: Cousins united in music
This weekend, the Reggae Geel Festival 2011 will host a great selection of young talents from the reggae world. Amongst those present will be Don Corleon, one of the most talented producers of those last years, who is coming to introduce us two young singers he’s working with and promoting : Pressure Buss Pipe and Protoje. After their show last weekend at the Garance Festival in Bagnols-sur-Cèze in France, we had the opportunity to have a chat with Don Corleon and Protoje.
Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace: "Nowadays, most youths in Jamaica seem to be wasting their time away singing about guns and girls!"
Elke rechtgeaarde reggaefan kijkt natuurlijk al reikhalzend uit naar Reggae Geel, maar in het Waalse Floreffe vindt gelijktijdig ook nog het Esperanzah festival plaats en daar treedt in alle exclusiviteit Professor op, het toch niet onaardige zijproject van Groundation's Harrison Stafford. Maar omdat Harrison nu ook weer niet altijd aan het woord moet zijn publiceren we een gesprek met de legendarische drummer en "Rockers" acteur Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace die ook bij Professor de vellen beroert.
Gappy Ranks: "I'm singing music for the world."
One of the most surprising artists that have come up in the last years in Europe, Gappy Ranks has been seen twice on sound systems shows in Belgium. This summer the artist will be back in our land for a show with a live band at Reggae Geel 2011. We interviewed him last June after a show in Brussels.
Luciano: "I think it’s especially important for us, as reggae musicians, not only to sing about Africa, but also to go there!"
Het is zeker niet Luciano's eerste keer op het podium van Reggae Geel, maar ik ken weinig reggaefans die het zich beklagen dat hij weer op de affiche staat. Volgende week dus in Geel, nu nog even over zijn ondertussen alweer voorlaatste album 'United States Of Africa'.
