Jahwed Family wins second Beljam Cup Clash (NL/FR)
Last night Heartbeat movement from Dilbeek, Jahwed Family from Comines, Strange Fruit formBornem and Daktari Sound from Ghent stepped onto the stage of Vooruit to battle for the second Beljam Cup Clash title. Jahwed Family won.
Ken Boothe: "Music is the only language that all of us can speak!"
One of the last foundation artists alive and still touring, Ken Boothe was in Europe last summer for a couple of shows. We had the great opportunity to see his performance with the French No More Babylon Band at the Garance Festival in Bagnols-sur-Cèze in France and the chance to share some reasonings with him after the show. Here are some thoughts from Mr Ken Boothe.
Ernest Ranglin: reggae with the beauty of jazz
De 80(!)-jarige gitarist Ernest Ranglin heeft zondagavond in de Vooruit een zeer mooi concert gegeven. Met een vierkoppig jazzcombo dat de klassiekers uit ska en reggae virtuoos interpreteerde. En we zweefden nog op wolken van Rasta La Vista de avond voordien./Le guitariste octogénaire (80 ans !) Ernest Ranglin a donné un amour de concert dimanche soir au Vooruit. Avec un quatuor de jazz qui interprétait le standards du ska et du reggae de manière virtuose. Et on flottait encore sur les nuages de Rasta La Vista de la veille.

Barry 'Heptone' Llewellyn: the book of rules is closed
Barry Llewellyn (1947-2011) heeft in zijn laatste levensjaren gelukkig nog uitgebreid kunnen proeven van de waardering die hem en de rest van The Heptones in Europa altijd te beurt is gevallen. Zijn eerste en enige solo-single was bovendien een Beljam-productie./Heureusement, Barry Llewelyn (1947-2012) a pu gouter amplement, dans les dernières années de sa vie, l'appréciation que lui voua, lui et le reste des The Heptones, l'Europe depuis toujours. En plus, son unique single solo était une production Beljam.
Pablo Moses en Linton Kwesi Johnson voor een uitverkochte KVS
Het Festival des Libertés/Festival van de Vrijheid lijkt er geen enkele moeite meet te hebben hun jaarlijkse reggaetreffen uit te verkopen. Voor deze editie werden we uitgenodigd in een tot de nok gevulde Brusselse KVS waar Pablo Moses en, al voor de derde maal door het festival op hun affiche gezet, Linton Kwesi Johnson.

Strange Fruit heeft z’n naam als sound niet gestolen, net zoals Elephant man zijn bijnaam “Energy God” niet gestolen heeft. Afgelopen zondag nodigde de sound de halfgod uit in… Bornem.
De wedergeboorte van Studio One!
Studio One, ook wel eens het Motown van Jamaica genoemd, maar voor de reggaeliefhebber voor alles een ongelofelijke schatkamer aan lekkers, zou in 2012 eindelijk een herstart maken. Na de dood van oprichter Sir Coxsone Dodd in 2004 werd het stil in en rond Studio One Boulevard (het vroegere Brentford Road), maar Courtney Dodd, heeft nu grootse plannen met de erfenis van zijn vader!

Volgende week donderdag trakteert het Festival des Libertés ons naar jaarlijks gewoonte op een avondje reggae. Dit jaar kunt u in de Brusselse KVS gaan genieten van Pablo Moses en Linton Kwesi Johnson. Die laatste wordt sinds jaar en dag geruggensteund door Dennis Bovell en zijn Dub Band.
Wanted: Belgian talent @ Couleur Café (NL/FR)
Een line-up met artiesten uit vrijwel alle uithoeken van de wereld, festivalgangers met alle mogelijke huidskleuren en een kilometer lange Rue du Bien Manger waar je géén pakje friet met mayonaise kan bestellen: Couleur Café is zonder twijfel het meest wereldse festival in ons land. Toch is er elk jaar ook plaats voor wat couleur locale, en dat is dit jaar niet anders.
Le Festival Couleur Café est probablement le festival le plus international de notre pays. Il offre une programmation d’artistes des quatre coins du monde, des festivaliers avec toutes les gammes de couleurs de peau possibles et une Rue du Bien Manger d’un kilomètre de long, où on ne trouve pas de frites mayo ! Malgré tout cela, il reste en général encore un peu de place pour des artistes locaux. Ce sera à nouveau le cas cette année.
