Na twee eerdere passages in N9 villa ('09/'11) en één tijdens Helden in het Park ('09) veronderstellen we dat we Pura Vida nog amper moeten voorstellen aan de reggaeliefhebbers. Toch nog dit: de 11-koppige groep geldt ondertussen als dé beste Belgische reggaeband ooit en vorig jaar verscheen hun dubbel-lp We Nah Give Up, waarvan de eerste druk ondertussen is uitverkocht (geen nood, er komt een tweede). We Nah Give Up (goed voor een uitzonderlijke 5-sterren recensie in De Standaard) is opgenomen in zowel de Belgische Lost Ark-studio, als in Lions Den in Kingston/Jamaica, de studio van The Congos, die er alle vier op meezingen. Wat een eer en geloof maar niet dat deze Congos dat met om het even wie zouden doen. Ondertussen is er al een nieuwe plaat in voorbereiding, waarvoor tenor Congo Ashanti Roy in februari komt afzakken naar België. En terwijl hij hier toch is, zijn er vier concerten gepland. Kijk, we hadden al eerder mooie reggaenamen in huis (Desmond Dekker, Rico Rodriguez, Laurel Aitken, Johnny Clarke, The Skatalites, Mad Professor, Pat Kelly, Groundation, Dub Syndicate ...), maar dit is wel een uitzonderlijke: de enige echte Congo Ashanti Roydel Johnson! Stichtend lid, samen met Cedric Myton, van het oorspronkelijke duo The Congos (Watty Burnett kwam er nadien bij en Kenroy Ffyffe nog later). En nu komt het. Deze Congos namen in 1977 hun historische album Heart Of The Congos op, een rootsplaat die behoort tot het allermooiste Jamaicaanse muzikaal erfgoed. Nummers als Fisherman, Open Up The Gate, Can't Come In en Sodom & Gomorrow zijn absolute en niet stuk te krijgen klassiekers. Heart Of The Congos werd opgenomen in Lee Perry's Black Ark Studio en de plaat wordt alom beschouwd als behorende tot Perry's beste als producer. Dat wil wat zeggen! Vermelden we nog dat Roy de schoolbanken deelde met Perry en ook dat Ernest Ranglin (zie Helden in het Park '08) er lead guitar op speelt. Nog zo'n grootmeester in zijn vak. En de link is direct: de nu 80-jarige Ranglin leerde de ondertussen 64-jarige Ashanti gitaar spelen, toen hij als 16-jarige verhuisde naar Kingston. Het Congos-sprookje duurde niet al te lang en Ashanti startte een solo-carrière die hem naar Engeland bracht, waar hij terecht kon bij Adrian Sherwood's Singers & Players-project en Prince Far I. Hij bracht vier solo-albums uit en pas in 2004 verenigden The Congos zich opnieuw. In 2006 gingen ze op tournee in Europa en Azië, ze waren dat jaar de headliners van Reggae Geel. Ondertussen toerden ze wel vaker en toen ze in 2009 Gent aandeden, trok Pura Vida-voorman Bregt De Boever zijn stoute schoenen aan en sprak hen aan. Het klikte onmiddellijk ... and a new friendship was born. Waar de samenwerking nog zal toe leiden, weten we niet, maar we zijn wel razend benieuwd. En dat 17 februari een hoogdag wordt staat nu al vast.

SHORTCUT 'Heart of the Congos' behoort tot de absolute canon van de reggae en nu komt stichtend lid Congo Ashanti Roy, met zijn vrienden van Pura Vida, naar Eeklo. We zullen het maar geloven eens hij op ons podium staat.

Zachtmoedige rootsveteraan, rastafari in werk én leven.
Opgegroeid (°1946) in Jamaica, gemigreerd naar de UK op zijn 17e, daar begonnen bij The Vibrations en daarna bij Rudie and Youth aka IJahmen (meervoud) & the Shell Shock Show. Twee jaar cel uitgezeten (1972-1974) en zich toen helemaal gewijd aan rastafari, een nummer 1 hit gescoord in de UK (1985, een duet met zijn vrouw Madge), teruggekeerd naar Jamaica en intussen fiere bezitter van een opnamestudio in Christiana, Jamaica. En dan hebben we nog niets gezegd over zijn catalogue en songwriting credits (check T. Sutherland).
